Many ex-Agniveers want an office job in a central ministry, and the usual door is SSC CGL after Agniveer service. But the rules have changed, and older articles on SSC CGL after Agniveer are now wrong in several places. This guide uses the official 2026 notice, and it tells you plainly what the notice does not say.
SSC CGL after Agniveer: what the 2026 notice says
The Combined Graduate Level Examination 2026 notice lists its age limits as on 1 August 2026. The main age bands are 18 to 27, 20 to 30, 18 to 30 and 18 to 32 years, depending on the post. Graduation is the usual minimum qualification.
Now the point that matters for you. The notice has a long list of relaxation categories, with codes for SC, ST, OBC, PwBD and ex-servicemen. I read the full list. It has no separate code for ex-Agniveers. So in the CGL 2026 notice, I found no specific age relaxation or reservation for ex-Agniveers.
The ex-servicemen rules are different, and they are strict. The notice gives ex-servicemen a 3-year relaxation after deducting their military service from their age. It also says the ex-servicemen reservation applies to Group C posts only. Some other rules also apply, such as a minimum period of service for those without a degree. Agniveers are treated as a separate group by the government. So do not claim the ex-servicemen box unless a notice clearly says you may.
The exam pattern has changed
Older articles said CGL has four tiers. That is no longer true. The current pattern has two tiers. Tier I has four sections of 25 questions each, with 50 marks per section. It runs for one hour, and each wrong answer costs 0.50 mark. Tier II is the main paper. Reports say Tier I was planned for the months from August to September 2026 and Tier II for around December 2026, but dates move, so check the notice.
| Item | CGL 2026 detail |
| Age bands | 18-27, 20-30, 18-30, 18-32 (as on 1 Aug 2026) |
| Qualification | Graduate, for most posts |
| Tiers | Two: Tier I and Tier II |
| Tier I | 100 questions, 1 hour, 0.50 negative mark |
| Ex-Agniveer category | Not listed in the notice |
Pay levels in CGL
CGL posts sit at several levels. Basic pay is Rs. 25,500 at Level 4, Rs. 29,200 at Level 5, Rs. 35,400 at Level 6, Rs. 44,900 at Level 7 and Rs. 47,600 at Level 8. The exact level depends on the post, such as Auditor, Tax Assistant or Inspector. Allowances are extra. Older articles quoted in-hand figures. I removed them because they change with city and year.
What about CHSL?
CHSL is the Class 12 level exam. Its usual age band is 18 to 27 years. Posts include Lower Division Clerk, at Level 2 with basic pay of Rs. 19,900, and Data Entry Operator. Some CHSL notices also carry a Level 4 or Level 5 post. I could not open the official CHSL 2026 notice during this check. Reports say a notice appeared in September 2026, but I have not verified its numbers. Please read it on the SSC site before you plan.
Is SSC CGL after Agniveer realistic for you?
Be honest with yourself. CGL draws millions of applicants for a few thousand posts. If you left school after Class 12 and joined as an Agniveer, you will need a degree first. If you already hold one, you can start at once. In both cases, the question is time. How many hours a week can you give to study?
A fair target is two hours a day, six days a week, for a full year. That is about 600 hours. It is enough to cover the basics and to take many mock tests. SSC CGL after Agniveer is possible, but only with steady work. Pick CHSL first if you want a quicker, lower-level entry, and aim for CGL on a later attempt.
Also keep a backup. Apply to the central police forces and to railway jobs in the same year. A strong candidate keeps three or four doors open. That way one missed cut-off does not cost you a whole year.
A roadmap for SSC CGL after Agniveer
- Finish your degree while serving or soon after. A graduate qualification opens CGL.
- Read the latest notice and note the age as on the cut-off date.
- Study mathematics, reasoning, English and general awareness.
- Take weekly mock tests and track your section scores.
- Keep your papers ready for document verification.
You can use the IGNOU Agniveer programme to earn a degree. Half its credits come from your service training. Since CGL needs a degree, that path matters for you. Our age relaxation guide shows what relaxations exist in other exams.
One honest warning. A big part of the case for SSC CGL after Agniveer rests on competing as a general or reserved candidate. No quota is listed for you in this notice. That means your edge must come from your preparation. Four disciplined years in service can help with discipline, but marks decide the result.
The Staff Selection Commission publishes every notice at ssc.gov.in. If SSC adds an Ex-Agniveer category in a later notice, plan again at that point. Until then, treat SSC CGL after Agniveer as an open-competition route, and compare it with the 50 per cent central police route in our SSC GD guide.

2026 notice mein ex-Agniveer ke liye alag category nahi hai, yeh honest clarification bahut important hai. Two-tier pattern aur Tier I mein 0.50 negative marking wala point clearly samjhaya gaya hai. Har hafte mock test dene wala roadmap practical aur follow karne layak laga.
