Imagine you are a few months from your discharge date. You open your phone and see one headline: half of all CAPF constable seats may be set aside for ex-Agniveers. Is it true? Mostly, yes, with a few details to watch. This guide explains the CAPF Agniveer reservation, from the quota to the age relief and the tests you skip.
How the CAPF Agniveer reservation grew
In 2022 the government planned a 10% share for ex-Agniveers in Constable (General Duty) posts. The Border Security Force (BSF) went first. A gazette notice dated 18 December 2025 raised its share to 50%. On 21 July 2026 the Minister of State for Home Affairs told Parliament that a new Ex-Agniveer category now exists for Constable (GD) in the CAPFs, with 50% of vacancies reserved. You can read the official Lok Sabha reply.
| Force | Rule status in the sources we checked |
| BSF | Rules amended on 18 December 2025 |
| SSB | New recruitment rules notified in July 2026 |
| CISF | Rules amended, as reported by ThePrint |
| CRPF | Rules amended, as reported by ThePrint |
| ITBP | Not confirmed in the sources we checked |
The Assam Rifles followed with its own rule change. See our guide to the Assam Rifles Agniveer reservation. Since each force issues its own rules, read your force’s notice before you plan.
What you get
| Benefit | Detail |
| Reservation | 50% of Constable (GD) vacancies |
| Age relaxation | 3 years on the upper age limit |
| First batch | Up to 5 years in total under the BSF rule; some sites say 8 |
| Physical tests | PST and PET are skipped |
| Written exam | Skipped per the Lok Sabha reply |
One conflict is worth knowing. The Lok Sabha reply lists the written exam as exempt. Reports on the BSF rule from December 2025 mention only the PST and PET. The two may differ by force and by year, so confirm in the live notice.
The first batch of Agniveers had not finished its term when the reply was given. So hiring under this category is still ahead of us. A ThePrint report says the first batch is due to retire later in 2026.
How the quota works inside your category
This is a horizontal reservation. It cuts across the usual groups: General, OBC, SC, ST and EWS. You are placed within your own category. Ex-Agniveer seats left empty in a category move to the second phase of hiring.
How recruitment runs
- In phase one, the nodal force recruits for the 50% ex-Agniveer seats.
- In phase two, the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) fills the remaining seats, plus any ex-Agniveer seats left unfilled.
- You still need to clear the medical examination in the process.
- Always confirm the order of stages in your force’s notice.
What a constable earns
Constable (GD) is at Pay Level 3. Basic pay is Rs. 21,700 to Rs. 69,100. Allowances such as DA and HRA are added. Take-home depends on your posting, so we do not quote one fixed figure.
Documents to keep ready
- Discharge certificate and service record
- Character certificate
- Class 10 or Class 12 marksheet
- Aadhaar card and recent photographs
- Scanned copies of all of the above for online forms
Common mistakes about the CAPF Agniveer reservation
- Thinking all seats are 50% in every force today. Each force must amend its own rules, so check your force’s notice.
- Assuming the written exam is always skipped. The Lok Sabha reply says so, but earlier BSF reports mention only the PST and PET.
- Mixing up the first-batch age relief. Sources give 5 years in total, and some say 8, so read the notice.
- Applying under the wrong category. The ex-Agniveer share sits inside your category.
- Leaving out documents. A missing character certificate can stall your form.
Which force should you choose?
Under the CAPF Agniveer reservation, the pay level is the same in every force. So the real difference is the work and the posting. CISF guards airports, metro systems and industrial sites. CRPF often works in internal security and field duty. BSF guards the borders. SSB works on the Nepal and Bhutan borders. Think about where you want to live and which kind of duty suits you.
| Force | Typical role |
| BSF | Guarding India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh |
| CRPF | Internal security and law and order |
| CISF | Airports, metro and industrial security |
| SSB | Nepal and Bhutan borders |
Prepare now, even before notices open
Since the first batch had not completed its term when Parliament was told, notices under this quota will come later. Use the wait well. Keep your fitness high, gather your papers, and learn the notice format by reading old SSC GD notices. When the CAPF Agniveer reservation opens in your force, you will know exactly where to look.
A short example
Suppose Arjun finishes service and wants the CISF. He reads the CISF recruitment rules, notes the 50% share and keeps scanned papers. When a notice appears, he checks whether it lists Ex-Agniveer, how the first-batch age relief is written, and which stages apply. Because the CAPF Agniveer reservation depends on each force’s notice, this reading step is the most important part of his plan.
If you are comparing, our state-wise comparison table shows state options next to the central 50% quota.
In short, the CAPF Agniveer reservation sets aside 50% of Constable (GD) seats and removes several tests for you. Because each force issues its own rules, read your force’s notice before you rely on the CAPF Agniveer reservation.
