Picture this. You are in your last months as an Agniveer. A friend asks, “Will the Assam Rifles take you after four years?” Not long ago the honest answer was “maybe, for 10% of seats.” Today it is far better. The Assam Rifles Agniveer reservation now covers 50% of Rifleman (General Duty) vacancies. Here is what that means for you, in plain words.

How big is the Assam Rifles Agniveer reservation?

In 2022 the government planned a 10% share for ex-Agniveers in constable-level posts in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and the Assam Rifles. That share has grown. On 21 July 2026 the Minister of State for Home Affairs told Parliament that a new Ex-Agniveer category exists for Rifleman (General Duty) posts. Fifty percent of vacancies are reserved for it. You can read the official Lok Sabha reply yourself. A news report on the gazette notice says the Assam Rifles rules were changed to match.

BenefitWhat the Lok Sabha reply says
Reservation50% of vacancies
Age relaxation3 years on the upper age limit
First batchA further relaxation of 5 years beyond the upper age limit
Tests skippedPhysical Standards Test (PST), Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and the written exam

One point needs care. The reply says the first batch gets “5 years beyond” the upper age limit. The BSF and Delhi Police rules turn this into 5 years in total for the first batch and 3 years for later batches. Some news sites add the two numbers and say 8 years. Both readings are out there, so confirm the exact figure in the live notice before you apply.

Also note the timing. The reply says the first batch of Agniveers had not yet finished its term on 21 July 2026. So nobody has used this route yet. Real notices will follow once the first batch exits, which is due around the end of 2026 or early 2027.

Why the Assam Rifles follows Home Ministry rules

The Assam Rifles works under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The same ministry writes the hiring rules for the CAPFs. That is why the two lists of benefits look so alike.

How hiring works, step by step

The gazette report describes two phases. In the first phase the force recruits for the 50% ex-Agniveer seats. In the second phase the remaining seats, plus any ex-Agniveer seats left empty, are filled in the usual way. Regular Rifleman (GD) hiring has also run through the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exam, so watch both the Assam Rifles website and the SSC website.

  1. Watch the official Assam Rifles website and ssc.gov.in for new notices.
  2. Open the notice and look for the words “Ex-Agniveer” in the eligibility section.
  3. Scan your discharge certificate, service record, character certificate and Class 10 marksheet.
  4. Apply online or in the way the notice tells you, and pay any fee.
  5. Prepare for the medical examination. You skip PST and PET, but you must still be medically fit.

What the Rifleman post pays

Rifleman (General Duty) sits at Pay Level 3 of the 7th Pay Commission matrix. Allowances are added on top, and your take-home changes with your posting. Higher posts pay more, as the table shows.

PostPay levelBasic pay (Rs.)
Rifleman (General Duty)321,700 to 69,100
Havildar (Clerk)425,500 to 81,100
Warrant Officer (Cipher)529,200 to 92,300

These figures come from recent Assam Rifles notices. Pay can change, so check the notice you apply under.

Assam Rifles or CAPF: what is different?

The numbers are close, so your choice often comes down to where you want to live and work. Many Assam Rifles postings are in the Northeast, often in remote or hilly areas.

Common mistakes to avoid with the Assam Rifles Agniveer reservation

  • Assuming the quota is already open. The Lok Sabha reply says the first batch had not finished its term yet.
  • Copying the age rule from a friend’s notice. Read your own notice, because the first batch and later batches differ.
  • Skipping the medical standards. The tests you skip are the PST, PET and written exam, not the medical examination.
  • Trusting social media posts over the official gazette or the Home Ministry reply.
  • Waiting until the last day to upload documents, when portals slow down.

A simple timeline for the last year of service

Early on, collect copies of your service record and every certificate you hold. Midway, start watching the Assam Rifles and SSC websites each week. In the last three months, build a folder with scanned documents, and keep a short list of the notices you plan to apply to. When the first notice under the Assam Rifles Agniveer reservation appears, you will already be ready to apply on day one.

  1. Am I ready to live in remote Northeast postings for years?
  2. Does my family agree with a posting far from home?
  3. Have I compared this with a CAPF Constable post?
  4. Do I have a backup plan if no notice opens soon? Treat this route as a goal, but keep a second plan alive.
